Volvo 2.0L VEA (Volvo Engine Architecture) D4 diesel engines (D4204T14, D4204T5, 190 HP) installed in V60, XC60, V90, and XC90 models utilize a regulated twin sequential turbocharger assembly (BorgWarner K03 HP + K04 LP). Staging transition between the small High-Pressure (HP) and large Low-Pressure (LP) turbochargers is governed by three pneumatically-actuated valves managed by the ECM via a vacuum solenoid manifold.

Pneumatic Valve Network and Switching Logic

The VEA D4 turbo system incorporates three critical pneumatic control valves:

  • Turbine Exhaust Bypass Valve: Modulates exhaust gas routing between the small HP turbine and the large LP turbine.
  • Compressor Bypass Valve (CBV): Opens at higher RPM to route compressed air from the LP compressor directly to the intercooler, bypassing the HP compressor.
  • HP Turbine Cut-off Valve: Completely isolates the HP turbine at engine speeds exceeding >3200 RPM.

Diagnostic Protocol and P029900 Root Causes

The classic failure symptom in Volvo VEA D4 vehicles is a sudden loss of power during overtake acceleration (typically between 2500–3000 RPM), accompanied by diagnostic trouble code P029900 (Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost - General Failure Information). Diagnostic steps:

  1. Actuator Diaphragm Rupture Test: Thermal degradation causes the rubber diaphragms inside the pneumatic actuators to crack. Using a hand-held vacuum pump, apply -0.75 bar to each actuator; it must hold vacuum for a minimum of 60 seconds.
  2. Vacuum Harness Integrity: The vacuum distribution block located above the valve cover is prone to hair-line heat cracking. Verify main vacuum pump output (standard specification: -0.85 bar at idle).
  3. Solenoid Valve Resistance Check: Measure the internal coil resistance of the three switching solenoids. Factory spec at 20°C is 29 to 33 Ω.

Technical Fastener Specs and Electrical Values

  • Turbocharger Assembly to Cylinder Block Bolts (M8 10.9): 24 Nm + 45° torque angle.
  • Exhaust Manifold Mounting Nuts: 30 Nm.
  • Actuator Position Feedback Sensor Voltages: Closed position = 4.2V (+/- 0.1V), Open position = 0.8V (+/- 0.1V).

Replacing ruptured actuator diaphragms followed by executing the VIDA diagnostic adaptation procedure fully restores factory 190 HP boost response across the entire RPM band.
