Introduction to Kawasaki Ninja H2 / H2R Supercharger Architecture

The Kawasaki Ninja H2 and track-only H2R (310 HP / 326 HP with Ram-Air) stand as the only mass-production motorcycles featuring a factory-installed centrifugal supercharger. Engineered in co-operation with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) Gas Turbine & Machinery division, the compact supercharger operates without an intercooler while driving its impeller to an astonishing 130,000 RPM.

Planetary Step-up Transmission Physics

To multiply engine crankshaft speed (redlining at 14,000 RPM) up to the impeller operating domain, the supercharger incorporates a planetary step-up gear train featuring a 9.2:1 gear ratio machined to horological tolerances:

  • Speed Multiplication: At 14,000 engine RPM, the planetary step-up drive spins the compressor shaft to exactly 128,800 RPM.
  • Impeller Metallurgy: A 69 mm diameter impeller 5-axis CNC-machined from a single billet of forged aircraft-grade aluminum, featuring 6 full blades and 6 splitter blades.
  • Lubrication Circuit: High-pressure oil jets fed directly from the main engine oil pump spray a continuous atomized stream onto the planetary gear teeth and high-speed bearings.

Slip-Clutch Overload Protection and Maintenance Protocol

To shield the planetary gear train from destructive rotational inertia spikes during rapid gear upshifts and downshifts, the drive gear incorporates an internal multi-plate slip clutch:

  1. Slip Torque Inspection: Every 12,000 km (7,500 miles) or track service interval, measure the breakaway slip torque using the Kawasaki special tool adapter (ST 57001-1845).
  2. Torque Limits: The clutch pack must break away at a torque specification of 12.5 Nm to 14.5 Nm. A slip torque measuring below <10 Nm mandates clutch friction disc replacement.
  3. Impeller Clearance Spec: Cold clearance between the impeller blade tips and the inlet scroll housing must measure between 0.25 mm and 0.35 mm.

Fastener Torque Specifications

  • Supercharger Housing Assembly Bolts: 12 Nm.
  • Impeller Retaining Nut (Left-Hand Thread): 15 Nm (applied with high-strength threadlocker).
  • Planetary Gearbox Mounting Screws: 9.8 Nm.
