In Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines, 3-wheeled auto-rickshaws (Tuk-Tuks) and commercial mini-trucks (Kei-Trucks) rely on 660cc 3-cylinder engines (**Daihatsu EF-DET / EF-VE**, **Suzuki F6A / K6A**, **Mitsubishi 3G83**). To transport heavy passenger and cargo payloads through Bangkok's intense traffic and tropical heat, these small engines are retrofitted with **IHI HT06 / RHF3** turbochargers calibrated to run on **LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)**.
LPG Gas Reducer Boost Pressure Compensation Mechanics
When adapting a turbocharged engine to LPG, standard atmospheric LPG reducers fail under positive manifold pressure because boost overrides gas delivery. Engineers must implement positive pressure compensation across the LPG vaporizer:
- Boost Reference Compensation Line: Plumb a 6 mm reinforced silicone line from the intake manifold plenum directly to the upper atmospheric reference chamber of the LPG reducer/vaporizer diaphragm. This forces LPG outlet pressure to scale 1:1 in lockstep with turbo boost pressure.
- Differential Gas Pressure Target: LPG differential pressure relative to manifold pressure must be calibrated to maintain 0.9 bar to 1.1 bar above boost pressure.
- Venturi Mixer Sizing: On carbureted 660cc engines, restrict the LPG ring mixer Venturi throat diameter to 24 mm to sustain sufficient suction draw upstream of the turbocharger inlet.
Diagnostic Protocol and EGT Thermal Management
Because LPG burns with a higher adiabatic flame temperature than petrol (pushing Exhaust Gas Temperature [EGT] over >900°C), micro-turbines face severe housing cracking and exhaust valve burning:
- EGT Thermocouple Installation: Thread a K-type EGT probe into the exhaust manifold collector upstream of the IHI HT06 turbine inlet. Continuous max EGT threshold is capped at **880°C**. Higher EGT readings require enriching the LPG gas mixture.
- Wastegate Actuator Calibration: Set the internal wastegate actuator crack pressure to 0.6 bar (8.7 PSI), representing the safe mechanical loading limit for stock 660cc connecting rods.
- Heavy-Duty Tropical Cooling Upgrade: Replace the single-row factory radiator with a 3-row full-aluminum radiator paired with a high-CFM 12V electric cooling fan.
